Biography

Dr. Tong received his Doctor of Medicine degree in 1992 from London Hospital (now Royal London Hospital) Medical College. He commenced his core internal medical training in Belfast, Northern Ireland, before completing his emergency medicine specialty training in 2005 from Addenbrookes Hospital, Cambridge, UK.

Dr. Tong specializes in the urgent and emergency diagnosis and treatment of illness and injury in adults and children, ranging from cardiorespiratory arrest and viral illness, to major trauma and minor wounds and sprains.

In addition, he has vast experience in observational medicine (same day emergency care), managing patients who may need observation or treatment for up to 24 hours, such as head injury, poisoning or anaphylaxis.

Dr. Tong has over 30 years of clinical experience. Before joining Shenzhen United Family Hospital, Dr. Tong served as a consultant in emergency medicine in Queen Elizabeth Hospital King’s Lynn, from 2005 to 2021. He was the lead consultant between 2014 and 2020. The emergency room there had an average daily attendance of 220 patients of all ages, covering the full spectrum of acuity of illness and injury. Approximately 40% of patients would arrive by ambulance, including from the air ambulance service.

In addition to clinical work, Dr. Tong has also published several papers on diverse subjects, including a Cochrane review of intubation in the severely injured, a study on capillary blood glucose testing in the British Medical Journal, and an abstract about urinary Dipstix testing in the diagnosis of urinary tract infection, which was presented at the European Society of Emergency Medicine.

Dr. Tong has been heavily involved in education, and was responsible for senior trainees in emergency medicine in the east of England from 2012 to 2016. He was then promoted to overall Head of School between 2016 to 2021, overseeing the training of over 300 trainees. He is an established examiner for the Royal College of Emergency Medicine exams and also regularly teaches Advanced Life Support (ALS), European Paediatric Advanced Life Support (EPALS) and Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) courses. He is a recognized course director for ALS and EPALS. He continues to work with the global health section of Health Education England to improve international recruitment of emergency medicine doctors in the UK.
